SUMMARY

John Austin is a well-known UK-based public transport industry expert.  With extensive industry understanding, wide-ranging contacts, a sound awareness of commercial pressures, confident marketing skills, a strong focus on user needs and assured data research expertise, he has been in business as a consultant since 1994.  Clients appreciate the way his clear understanding of strategic issues and of the major policy issues in transport are combined with both an attention to detail and strong analytical skills.

John has particular interests in the provision of travel information, in workable business models for delivery of quality transport schemes, and in innovative solutions to transport problems.  He has a background in commercial public transport planning and operations, in the local authority sector, and in information and telecoms strategy.  These give him a wide understanding of the practical, political, financial, and technological issues affecting transport project development.

One of the first to recognise the potential of the Internet for the public transport industry and its customers, he initiated the UK Public Transport Information website, at www.pti.org.uk, in 1996: he has since been involved in several different aspects of both traveline and Transport Direct.  John has worked in the former USSR and throughout Europe, as well as in Australia and Asia, and regularly speaks at conferences and seminars.

John often works closely with other independent consultancies, including Social Research Associates, Ankerbold, WarmanConsult, and colleagues in Transport Associates Network.
